On January 26, 2016, the bulk carrier 'Apollon' made an unscheduled stop near Bermuda to facilitate a medical evacuation for a 26-year-old crew member suspected of having appendicitis. The Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre (BMOC) was first alerted on January 20, while the vessel was approximately 1,000 nautical miles east-southeast of Bermuda, amid challenging maritime conditions with heavy seas. The crew member, a Filipino national, was reported to be stable, receiving ongoing medical guidance from shore while being monitored closely by the onboard team. The 'Apollon' reached the East End of Bermuda around 10:30 p.m. local time, where the Marine & Ports pilot boat 'St. George' was dispatched to safely transport the patient to Ordnance Island for further medical care.
