Icebreaker Kapitan Dranitsyn Commences Operations in Pevek Port
FSUE Rosmorport has announced that its icebreaker, Kapitan Dranitsyn, has officially begun operations at the seaport of Pevek, following the winter standby period necessitated by ice movements. Previously, the Kapitan Dranitsyn played a crucial role during the overwintering phase in Pevek, ensuring the safe mooring of vessels Iogan Makhamstal and Sinegorsk. These ships delivered essential general cargoes, including materials and components for terminal construction, in January 2017. This operation was supported by the heroic efforts of FSUE Rosmorport's icebreakers, including both Kapitan Dranitsyn and Admiral Makarov. Looking ahead, the Mikhail Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant is set to be deployed at the port's berth.
Pevek Port Experiencing Breakthrough: Ice-locked Ships Finally Set Sail After Five-Month Standstill
After enduring a grueling five months trapped in ice, cargo vessels «Johan Makhmastall» and «Sinegorsk» are now moving from Pevek, a remote port town on the East Siberian Sea. Their journey began in early January when the icebreaker «Kapitan Dranitsyn» skillfully guided them to Pevek. Despite the successful arrival, the harsh ice conditions left the ships unable to navigate back home. The winter in this isolated Arctic community was prolonged and harsh, raising concerns for the crews aboard. It wasn't until late May that «Kapitan Dranitsyn» was finally able to break the ice and facilitate the ships' departure from the port. According to Rosmorport, the state-owned enterprise responsible for port development, the ice conditions have finally improved enough to allow for the movement of vessels out of Pevek harbor.
Rosneft Conducts Major Iceberg Towing Operations in the Kara Sea
In an ambitious effort to enhance marine safety, Rosneft, in collaboration with its research associates, has successfully undertaken trials involving the towing of massive icebergs, including one weighing an astounding million tons. These innovative tests took place in the Kara Sea, facilitated by the Arctic Science Center and the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI), and explored the towing of icebergs of varying shapes and sizes under a range of meteorological conditions. Utilizing advanced resources, including the icebreaker Kapitan Dranitsyn and the research vessel Akademik Treshnikov, the team demonstrated precision by maneuvering the icebergs through rotations of 90 to 180 degrees from their initial trajectories. Notably, they achieved a remarkable feat by relocating two icebergs simultaneously during one operation. These pioneering trials aim to bolster the protection of vital marine infrastructure, particularly oil and gas platforms operating on the Arctic shelf, from potential interactions with drifting icebergs.
