Emergency Evacuation from Oil Tanker 'Katsuyama' Due to Carbon Monoxide Exposure
In a startling incident on January 13, 2025, emergency services responded to the oil tanker 'Katsuyama' moored in Rotterdam's Waalhaven, where two individuals were evacuated due to carbon monoxide poisoning. The alarm was raised around 5:30 a.m. after the two men reported feeling unwell and subsequently fell from a height into the ship's hold. Fortunately, both were conscious and able to leave the vessel on their own before being transported to the hospital by ambulance. The 'Katsuyama,' which was carrying coconut and palm oil, was subject to a thorough inspection by the fire department, which discovered elevated levels of carbon monoxide in the hold. While the immediate status of the evacuated individuals as crew members or external personnel remains unclear, a trauma team and a specialized high-altitude rescue team were on standby in case further assistance was required. However, their services were ultimately not needed. Simultaneously, the ship's crew conducted a headcount to ensure that no one else was affected or missing. Investigations into the source of the carbon monoxide are currently underway, and further measures will be implemented as necessary. Prior to this incident, the tanker had departed from Pasir Gudang on December 10 and arrived in Rotterdam via the Suez Canal on January 12, 2025, remaining docked until January 14. The fire department has since cleared the scene, ensuring safety protocols are in place to prevent future occurrences.
