On Wednesday, the Port of Olympia is poised to make history by receiving its inaugural shipment of organic corn, marking the first imported cargo to arrive at the marine terminal in over a year. Once a regular hub for importing ceramic proppants, also known as fracking sand, to support the oil industry in North Dakota, the port has seen a significant decline in activity since the last shipment of proppants in January 2015 due to falling oil prices. This landmark corn shipment signifies a promising opportunity for renewed business, as expressed by Marine Terminal Director Len Faucher during a discussion on Tuesday. Faucher highlighted that other ports, including Port of Longview, were not able to accommodate the cargo, leading to a competitive bid where Olympia ultimately emerged victorious. "We had the equipment ready to go," Faucher remarked, referring to the terminal's warehouse and crane capabilities. The bulk shipment, totaling 5,000 metric tons of corn, is set to arrive from Turkey aboard the Ozge Aksoy, a vessel comparable in size to the log ships that frequently frequent the port. This event not only emphasizes the potential for future growth at the Port of Olympia but also revitalizes its role as an important player in the shipping industry.
