Collision Incident Involving Tanker near Senja Under Investigation
On April 18, 2019, at approximately 5:30 p.m., the tanker 'Key Marmara' was involved in a suspected collision with a 19-foot fishing boat belonging to Mefjord Brygge AS, carrying three Polish tourists, off the coast of Senja. The incident occurred in Mefjordvær, about 10 miles northwest of the area in Tromsø. The Norwegian patrol vessel 'Sortland' intervened promptly, rescuing the occupants who had found themselves in a precarious situation after their vessel capsized. The Coast Guard played a critical role in the recovery, extracting the tourists from the inverted boat, which had ended up drifting keel-up. Following the rescue, the damaged fishing boat was towed back to Mefjord pier for further inspection. Authorities are currently conducting an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision. Initial inquiries revealed that both vessels were in close proximity to each other at the time of the accident, though the exact distance remains to be established. While the fishing boat sustained some bending of its railing, the extent of physical damage appears to be minimal. The 'Key Marmara' was on a scheduled journey from Florø, where it departed on April 15, with a destination in Kaliningrad, anticipated to arrive on April 24 at 3 p.m. For more detailed local coverage, you can check the report featuring a photograph at: https://www.kystogfjord.no/nyheter/forsiden/Etterforsker-mulig-kollisjon-med-lastebaat.
Collision Incident In Svetly: Key Marmara Strikes Alana Evita
On December 23, 2016, a maritime incident occurred in Svetly, within the Russian territory of Kaliningrad, when the tanker, 'Key Marmara', collided with the Dutch freighter, 'Alana Evita', which was securely docked at the time. The allision took place when the 'Key Marmara' veered off course and was unable to halt in time, resulting in a collision with the starboard side of the freighter. This unfortunate event caused significant damage to the hull of the 'Alana Evita', creating a large breach partially below the waterline due to the impact of the tanker’s bulbous bow. Fortunately, the 'Key Marmara' sustained only minor damage and was able to continue its journey from Kaliningrad to Egersund on December 26. In contrast, the 'Alana Evita' will require extensive repairs before it can resume operations. Key Marmara Rescued After Being Adrift Near Rotterdam Due to Engine Failure
On November 21, 2015, the tanker 'Key Marmara' faced a critical engine failure while navigating near the bustling port of Rotterdam. Situated at coordinates 51°59.01 N and 004°02.03 E, the vessel was on the verge of crashing into the dam at the entrance of the New Waterway, a key maritime route connecting the North Sea to Rotterdam. The incident occurred around 2:20 PM when, despite dropping its anchors, the ship was still at risk of colliding with the wall amid swells reaching two meters and gusty winds of six Beaufort. Fortunately, a team of tugboats that were accompanying the 'Stena Hollandica' to the North Sea quickly intervened. By 2:34 PM, they successfully gained control of the 'Key Marmara,' stopping it just ten meters shy of the stone blocks of the southern jetty. Additional support came from KNRM boat 'Jeanine Parqui' stationed at Hoek van Holland, as well as the pilot tender 'Aquila,' which played vital roles in the rescue operation. After being stabilized, the tanker was towed towards Vlaardingen, where it docked at Vopak at 2:25 PM for inspection and repairs. Following necessary checks and engine repairs, the 'Key Marmara' departed from Rotterdam on November 22 at 3:30 PM, setting sail towards Rostock, with an estimated time of arrival on November 24.
