TSB Launches Investigation into Kivalliq W. Incident in Nunavut

Nov 06, 2025 12:47

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has initiated an investigation into an incident involving the 'Kivalliq W.', which sustained damage during a fuel transfer operation in Nunavut on October 15. The vessel, owned by Coastal Shipping Ltd, part of the Woodward Group of Companies, experienced a mechanical failure that resulted in damage to a fuel tank. This incident occurred while the ship was discharging diesel intended for a delivery to a mine site in Nunavut. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, and there were no spills of hydrocarbons. Following the incident, a replacement vessel was deployed to continue operations. TSB investigators boarded the 'Kivalliq W.' in Happy Valley-Goose Bay on November 5, having arrived the previous day from Sept-Isles. The investigation will unfold in three distinct phases: initial data collection in the field, detailed examination and analysis, and culminate in a comprehensive reporting phase.

Kivalliq W Suffers Damage During Fuel Discharge at Nunavut Mine

Oct 17, 2025 12:22

On October 15, 2025, the tanker 'Kivalliq W' encountered technical issues while discharging diesel fuel destined for a mine site in Baker Lake, Nunavut. Fortunately, despite the mechanical failure that damaged one of its fuel tanks, no injuries occurred, and there were no hydrocarbon spills, ensuring environmental safety during the incident. Baker Lake is a small community home to approximately 2,000 residents. As of the afternoon of October 16, the vessel was still in the process of offloading fuel, demonstrating the resilience and efficiency of the operations managed by Coastal Shipping Limited, part of the Woodward Group of Companies. To mitigate any potential disruptions in the critical fuel supply as winter approaches, Coastal Shipping has proactively engaged another vessel for three essential fuel shipments from Lewisporte to various Arctic ports. An investigation into the incident is underway, alongside a thorough assessment of the damage to the 'Kivalliq W,' which will require drydock repairs. This strategic response ensures that vital resources will continue to reach communities and industrial sites across Canada’s Arctic region promptly.

Fire Erupts on Tanker Kivalluq W in Halifax: A Detailed Response

Jan 28, 2019 09:45

On January 27, 2019, at approximately 7 a.m., Halifax's firefighting units responded to an emergency call regarding a fire on the tanker 'Kivalluq W,' which was moored at the Imperial Oil Wharves in Halifax. The blaze ignited in the vessel's generator compartment. Initially, the crew attempted to suppress the fire but were unsuccessful. As a result, Halifax firefighters were summoned to the scene and subsequently requested assistance from the dockyard fire team of the Department of National Defence, known for their expertise in maritime firefighting. After a rigorous two-hour battle against the flames, the firefighting teams successfully extinguished the fire by shortly after 8 a.m. It is noteworthy that while Imperial Oil previously maintained its own fire department, it was disbanded following the closure of the refinery, with its two fire engines sold off at auction. The 'Kivalluq W,' managed by Coastal Shipping—a subsidiary of Newfoundland’s Woodward Group—was slated for relocation to Pier 9 for repairs that night, but those plans have since been canceled.
