In the wake of these developments, the advocate is calling for a thorough forensic analysis that entails the collection of paint samples from both the 'Korea Chemi' and the damaged 'Mercy Annai'. Furthermore, the advocate demands that the appropriate Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for marine accidents be implemented and a preliminary investigation be initiated as per the Merchant Shipping Act of 1958. Additionally, compensation of 1 crore Indian Rupees is being sought for the fishing vessel and its crew, invoking Rule 3 of the Merchant Shipping (Regulation of Entry of Ships into Ports, Anchorages and Offshore Facilities) Rules 2012.

On October 19, 2023, a serious maritime incident occurred off the coast of Kannur involving the tanker 'Korea Chemi'. The vessel, which was making its way from Kabil, collided with the Indian fishing boat 'Mercy Annai', which had six crew members aboard. The accident took place at coordinates 12 00 50N, 074 19 50E, approximately 45 nautical miles from Kannur. The collision caused extensive damage to the fishing vessel, resulting in two fishermen being thrown into the water, while significant loss occurred as their nets were destroyed and the 'Mercy Annai' was dragged for considerable distance. Following the incident, the tanker 'Korea Chemi' made its way to Nhava Sheva, arriving on October 21, 2023.
