Damen Shiprepair & Conversion Prepares CN Bulkers' Newly Acquired Fleet for Operational Readiness in Eight Weeks

Mar 30, 2016 10:18

Damen Shiprepair & Conversion has successfully conducted maintenance and surveys on four bulk carriers recently acquired by CN Bulkers, a collaboration between Universal Shipping & Trading and NedNor. The extensive work was executed at Damen's Rotterdam facilities, specifically at Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam (Schiedam) and Damen Shiprepair Van Brink Rotterdam (Pernis). These four bulk carriers, each weighing between 16,000 and 17,000 DWT, had been idle following the bankruptcy of their former owners and had not undergone dry-docking since 2012. After making their way from the Mediterranean, some vessels were towed while others powered their journey independently, reaching Rotterdam by late December and early January, with two ships assigned to each of the yards. The maintenance tasks included 5-year special surveys for three of the vessels and a comprehensive 15-year special survey for the fourth. Each vessel received significant attention, boasting a complete cleaning and repainting below the waterline, alongside selected blasting and painting on the topsides. By mid-February, two of the vessels were primed for sea, with another ready by February 24th, and the final ship leaving the dock on March 8th. The timely completion of these repairs was crucial, as at least one vessel is already booked for charter. This refurbishment also included the application of new names for the vessels, which are now designated as Sotra, Sanna, Senja, and Silda. Universal Marine is set to provide management services for the newly revitalized fleet.
