Successful Salvage Operation Refloats 'Lady Rosemary' from Breakwater
On December 7, the salvage operation for the cargo vessel 'Lady Rosemary' concluded successfully as the ship was refloated. The salvage effort was executed in multiple phases, as the vessel initially sustained damage to its bow while breaking through the seawall, leading to an oil leak into the harbor. To mitigate the environmental impact, salvage crews first focused on containing the spill using booms while transferring oil from the ship's fuel tanks to other vessels. Around 11 a.m. on December 7, during high tide, the team commenced the refloating operation. The Japan Coast Guard temporarily shut down port traffic to facilitate the process. A tugboat was secured to the bow of the 'Lady Rosemary', and another tug was positioned alongside to assist in the extraction. Ultimately, the combined efforts of both tugs successfully freed the vessel from the wall while ensuring the oil boom stayed in place to contain any potential spills. Following the operation, the 'Lady Rosemary' was towed to Kashii Park Port Container Terminal in Hakata. Authorities from the Fukuoka Maritime Security Department are continuing their investigation into the incident's circumstances. Preliminary findings indicated no mechanical issues with the vessel, and the harbor lighthouse was confirmed to be operational. However, the possibility of navigational negligence remains under consideration. The oil spill has impacted the waters of Hakata Bay, with slicks detected as far as six miles away on the coast of Shiga Island. In light of the contamination, local fishermen have been prohibited from fishing in the affected areas. Refrigerated Cargo Ship 'Lady Rosemary' Stranded Near Hakata Breakwater
On November 28, 2021, the refrigerated cargo vessel 'Lady Rosemary', transporting a shipment of bananas, ran aground on the breakwater at Hakata, positioned approximately one kilometer northwest of the Suzaki Wharf. The incident occurred at 11:45 p.m., just 15 minutes after the ship's departure from the port. At the time, sea conditions were calm, and the local lighthouse was functioning properly. Following the collision, fuel began to leak from the damaged bow, prompting the Japanese Coast Guard to deploy an oil boom to contain the spill and prevent environmental damage. The ship had penetrated the concrete barrier significantly. As of November 29, the 'Lady Rosemary' remained grounded at coordinates 33Β° 37.01' N and 130Β° 22.94' E, with assistance provided by the tugboat 'Eishun' (MMSI: 431602341).
