Seafarers Abandoned: ITF Reports on Vessel LAGAVULIN

Aug 01, 2024 00:00

The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) has raised an alarming concern regarding the vessel LAGAVULIN, identified by IMO number 9130810, which is currently under a state of abandonment. This Panama-flagged ship, docked at the port of Lome in Togo, has left its crew in dire circumstances. The 15 hardworking seafarers aboard the LAGAVULIN, hailing from diverse nationalities including Armenia, Georgia, India, Nigeria, Russia, and Ukraine, have not been compensated for their labor in six months. This report was submitted to the ITF on August 1, 2024, and the case remains open as the organization monitors and advocates for the rights of these abandoned seafarers. The ITF's Seafarers Abandonment List serves as a critical resource in documenting and addressing such cases globally, highlighting the urgent need for reform in the treatment of maritime workers.

Mystery of Abandoned Yacht Discovered by the Nordic Nora Resolved

Jan 20, 2015 09:09

On January 18, 2015, during a voyage from Rotterdam to Le Havre, the vessel "Nordic Nora" made a startling discovery 41 miles west of Hoek van Holland—a capsized sailboat. The alarm was raised promptly at 5:20 PM, leading to immediate action from the Dutch Coastguard, which dispatched the KNRM lifeboat "Jeanine Parqui" from Hook of Holland along with an NHV search and rescue helicopter from the Maasvlakte. The "Nordic Nora" remained in the vicinity, providing crucial support until the NHV helicopter arrived at 6:20 PM. A trained rescue swimmer was deployed to inspect the distressed 6-meter sailboat, only to find it devoid of any crew members. While the helicopter scoured the waters for possible individuals in distress, the Coastguard engaged with their Belgian and British counterparts to trace a reported missing yacht. By 8 PM, the KNRM lifeboat "Jeanine Parqui" reached the scene. Shortly thereafter, at 8:45 PM, authorities in France communicated that a sailboat registered under CH502994 had gone adrift from Cherbourg on January 9, raising concerns but, thankfully, confirming that no individuals were unaccounted for. KNRM rescuers righted the sailboat and efficiently pumped out excess water. The lifeboat then towed the recovered vessel back to Hoek van Holland, where it safely arrived at 1:00 AM on January 19.
