On January 30, 2018, at 6 a.m., a coordinated medivac operation took place that highlighted the exceptional teamwork of various rescue organizations off the coast of Durban. The NSRI Durban duty crew, in conjunction with NSRI ASR (Airborne Sea Rescue) swimmers, the South African Air Force’s 15 Squadron, and Netcare 911 rescue paramedics, prepared for a crucial mission. Their objective was to reach the 'Lake D' vessel, located 50 nautical miles offshore, where a 47-year-old Filipino sailor was experiencing a stroke (CVA). Alarmed the previous day, on January 29, the Airborne Sea Rescue team stood ready as the ship was expected to move closer to Durban by dawn. A SAAF 15 Squadron Oryx helicopter was dispatched and successfully met the vessel offshore. Once on site, NSRI rescue swimmers and Netcare 911 paramedics were hoisted onto the ship, assessing the patient’s critical condition. The sailor, while serious, was stable enough to be hoisted into the helicopter. He was subsequently airlifted to a hospital in Durban, receiving urgent medical attention.
