Courageous Rescue: Tanker 'Lamentin' Saves Four Fishermen After Six Days at Sea
On January 20, 2013, the crew of the tanker 'Lamentin' executed a remarkable rescue operation, saving four fishermen who had been stranded at sea for six agonizing days west of Guadeloupe Island. The fishermen had set sail from the South Leeward Coast of St. Vincent Island on January 12, aiming for Antigua, when they encountered dire troubles that left their vessel disabled and adrift. The situation escalated when the brother of one of the crew members reported them missing on January 14. The Coast Guard Sector San Juan in Puerto Rico promptly sprang into action, broadcasting an urgent marine information alert and enlisting the assistance of the Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater in Florida for aerial support. In a coordinated response, French, Barbadian, and Dutch aircraft joined forces to search for the stranded fishermen. After a lengthy airborne search, a C-130 aircraft from Clearwater successfully located the disabled fishing vessel. In a critical maneuver, the crew deployed vital supplies including a radio, an emergency position indicating radio beacon, and food and water to aid the stranded men. Upon retrieving these supplies, the fishermen established communication with the C-130, revealing that one of their own was suffering from severe dehydration. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the C-130 alerted the nearby tanker 'Lamentin,' which was en route to Pointe Lusas-St. Croix, to change course and provide assistance. The tanker arrived on the scene and successfully retrieved the four survivors from their vessel. Following their safe extraction, the 'Lamentin' continued its journey to St. Croix, Virgin Islands, where the fishermen were handed over to waiting paramedics who provided the necessary medical care. This extraordinary rescue operation showcased teamwork and quick thinking in the face of adversity, ultimately ensuring the fishermen's safe return to shore.
