On May 12, 2024, the tanker 'Lascaux' played a heroic role in rescuing the two crew members of the 15.75-meter sailing yacht 'Alborán Cognac.' The incident unfolded while the yacht was en route from Gibraltar to Banco del Hoyo and was struck by orcas around 9 a.m., approximately 26 kilometers off Cape Spartel, which marks the southern entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar. The attack resulted in significant damage to the yacht's rudder blade and hull, causing water to flood the vessel. In response to the dire situation, the panicked sailors promptly issued an emergency distress call. Authorities at Salvamento Marítimo advised them to don their life jackets, activate their AIS, and prepare radio beacons for their potential rescue. A helicopter was launched from Spain, while the nearby tanker 'Lascaux' was diverted to assist the stricken vessel.
