Severe Weather Halts Medical Evacuation from Fishing Trawler Lazurnyy
On the night of November 24, 2024, a critical rescue operation involving the fishing trawler 'Lazurnyy' was interrupted due to adverse weather conditions. The trawler, situated west of the Lofoten Islands, required immediate assistance after one of its crew members experienced life-threatening medical issues. The alarm was raised shortly after 1 p.m., prompting the Norwegian Coast Guard’s HRS Nord-Norge to deploy a rescue helicopter from Bodø for the vital medical evacuation. The SAR Queen, the helicopter tasked with the rescue, made a strategic stop at Røst for refueling before heading towards the trawler, located approximately 300 kilometers away. Despite wind speeds ranging from 4 to 6 m/s and wave heights peaking at 2.7 meters—conditions deemed risky—the rescue mission faced insurmountable challenges due to the weather. Consequently, the evacuation was aborted, and the 'Lazurnyy' has since adjusted its course towards Tromsø to transport the injured crew member for the necessary medical attention.
