Sanctioned Tanker Lynx Struggles in Ice-Laden Arctic Waters

Sep 15, 2025 10:51

The tanker 'Lynx' recently found itself at a standstill in the icy expanse of the Arctic, awaiting favorable conditions to continue its journey along Russia's Northern Sea Route. On September 6, 2025, the vessel, carrying approximately one million barrels of oil from Murmansk bound for China, halted at a latitude of 72° north. While its final destination remains undisclosed, the tanker is among several unsanctioned oil tankers operating in the region, transporting Moscow's crude oil to Chinese markets. The vessel encountered late-season sea ice, demonstrating the significant navigational obstacles faced by ships lacking ice protection in these frigid waters. After several days of lingering, the 'Lynx' resumed its expedition at a snail's pace, maneuvering near the shoreline in search of an unobstructed passage through the ice. Notably, the vessel does not possess a mandatory Arctic shipping permit and was absent from Russian authorities' daily traffic logs, a practice that has become commonplace to obscure sanction-busting activities. The 'Lynx' is currently under sanctions imposed by the US, UK, EU, and other countries for violating the G7 oil price cap and participating in high-risk shipping operations. Earlier in September, the LNG carrier 'Arctic Metagaz' experienced a similar predicament, remaining stuck near Pevek for over a week, also lacking prior arrangements for icebreaker escorts, which are mandated by navigational regulations. Non-ice-class vessels are restricted from independent operations, even in minor ice conditions, according to the Northern Sea Route administration's guidelines. Ultimately, both the 'Lynx' and 'Arctic Metagaz' could only advance with the aid of nuclear icebreakers operating in the vicinity. Additionally, another LNG carrier, the 'La Perouse', also lacking ice-class capability, opted to turn back in Western Siberian waters rather than risk traversing the ice, favoring a lengthy detour around Africa instead. The ongoing scarcity of ice-class vessels has compelled operators to rely on non-protected ships while pushing the limits of navigation rules.

EU Expands Sanctions Against 52 Ships, Including 'Leo', Amid Ongoing Conflict

Dec 17, 2024 13:26

In a decisive move to bolster its stance against the ongoing conflict involving Russia, the European Union has implemented a fresh sanctions package on December 16, 2024, during its Foreign Affairs Council meeting. This latest initiative has seen the inclusion of 52 new vessels, prominently featuring the 'Leo', on the sanctions list. These vessels have been identified by the EU as instruments supporting Russia’s military operations. The sanctions primarily target ships involved in evading the oil price cap established by Western nations, as well as those implicated in the illicit transport of arms and stolen grain. This new measures bring the total number of vessels facing EU sanctions to 79, a significant majority of which are engaged in transporting Russian oil and military supplies. In addition to maritime targets, this sanctions package also encompasses 54 individuals and 30 entities contributing to Russia's war efforts. Notably, these include businesses and individuals from China and North Korea who are suspected of supplying Russia with dual-use materials critical for military applications. Among those sanctioned are two high-ranking North Korean officials and seven individuals and entities from China. The overarching aim of these sanctions is to elevate the operational costs for Russia by prohibiting access to EU ports and limiting maritime services, thereby curtailing its military capabilities.

Heroic Rescue at Sea: Tanker Saves Ten Fishermen from Sinking Trawler

Nov 12, 2016 16:32

In a remarkable act of maritime heroism, the fishing vessel "Baraka" experienced dangerous water ingress while operating in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Western Africa. As the situation worsened and the trawler began to sink, its crew quickly sent out a distress signal, calling for urgent assistance and evacuation. Responding promptly, the tanker "Leonid Loza" navigated towards the stricken vessel. The crew successfully rescued all 10 fishermen onboard and brought them to safety aboard the tanker. Unfortunately, the "Baraka" was left partially submerged, and salvage efforts were deemed too risky under the circumstances. After ensuring the well-being of the rescued fishermen, who fortunately reported no injuries, the "Leonid Loza" continued its journey towards Freetown, where it transferred the castaways to local authorities. Following the rescue mission, the tanker resumed its voyage to the Dalia offshore terminal in Angola, with an estimated arrival date of November 15, 2016, to load crude oil. The fishermen, all citizens of the Republic of Sierra Leone, will be repatriated home by local government officials.
