On the evening of March 28, 2019, at 10:40 p.m., the cargo vessel "Leo Iris" experienced a significant engine failure, causing it to drift precariously in the Pentland Firth between Caithness and Orkney, just northwest of Stroma Island. The Stornoway Coastguard quickly sprang into action, fearing that the vessel could potentially run aground on the treacherous rocks of the Skerries or collide with nearby ships. In response, both an emergency tug and the Longhope RNLI were mobilized to provide assistance. Fortunately, the skilled crew aboard the Leo Iris managed to perform temporary repairs on the damaged engines, successfully restarting them by 03:30 a.m. on March 29. Following this, the crew safely anchored the vessel off South Ronaldsay in Orkney. The Leo Iris had set sail from Norfolk, Virginia, on March 17, and was en route to Swinoujscie, with an estimated arrival set for March 31.
