Incident Involving M/V Peikko in Brake Port

Jan 16, 2018 09:27

On January 15, 2018, at 2:30 p.m., the cargo vessel m/v "Peikko" (IMO: 8324684) was involved in an allision incident while maneuvering at the pier in Brake, located in the Wesermarsch municipality. The 55-year-old shipmaster attempted to shift berths following the conclusion of the unloading operations but miscalculated the effects of local tide currents and wind conditions. As a result, the "Peikko" collided with two vessels moored at the pier: the bulk carrier "Aracari Arrow" (IMO: 9008706) and another ship named "Mistral." The incident caused considerable damage to the bulk carrier, leading to its detention in port for repairs. The "Peikko" itself sustained a breach in its hull, which required welding work before it could continue its journey. The vessel was later cleared to depart for Aarhus at 7:30 p.m. the same day, with an estimated time of arrival set for January 17. In connection with the incident, local police initiated an investigation against the vessel's master. Meanwhile, the bulk carrier "Aracari Arrow" managed to leave Brake on January 16 at 2:15 p.m., bound for Rouen with an ETA of 5 p.m. on January 18. The "Peikko" was navigating the Kiel Canal later that same day and was expected to arrive in Aarhus by noon on January 17. The "Mistral" also departed from the Brake pier at 4 p.m. and anchored at Blexen Roads on the Weser.

Machinist Rescued After Fall into Cold Waters of Trave River

Dec 04, 2012 10:23

On the evening of November 30, 2012, at 9:00 PM, a dramatic incident unfolded at the Ostpreussen Quay in Travemünde when a machinist aboard the tugboat 'Mitral' fell into the icy waters of the Trave River. The 69-year-old man from Hamburg had reportedly been celebrating at the nearby Christmas Market prior to the mishap. Witnesses observed him attempting to climb back onto the vessel with the help of a mate when he tragically misjudged his jump and slipped into the frigid water, which was measured at a chilling 6.5 °C. Thanks to the vigilance of onlookers, three quick-thinking individuals sprang into action, retrieving a rescue rod to assist in his recovery. Their efforts were successful, and the machinist was promptly pulled from the river, though he exhibited signs of hypothermia and was subsequently transported to the Sana Hospital for medical care. In the aftermath of this event, the Travemünde Water Police initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, particularly focusing on the absence of a necessary statutory gangway. Authorities are looking into the actions of the 49-year-old captain of the 'Mitral,' also from Hamburg, as part of their inquiries.
