In a significant legal development, Portline Bulk International, the operator of the bulk carrier 'Achilleus,' has agreed to a hefty $1.5 million fine following a violation involving the improper disposal of oily water. The offense dates back to August 2018, when engineers aboard the vessel were accused of discharging oily water into the ocean and subsequently falsifying records to conceal this environmental breach. This situation came to light when U.S. Coast Guard inspectors boarded the 'Achilleus' in August 2019 while it was docked at the Port of Charleston, revealing discrepancies in the ship's official bilge water disposal log. The case, which is currently progressing through federal court in Charleston, highlights serious concerns regarding maritime environmental practices. Additionally, two engineers from the ship have entered into plea agreements, each facing potential fines up to $250,000 and a maximum of six years in prison. A sentencing date for these individuals has yet to be announced.
