On July 28, 2024, at about 4:20 p.m., a distress signal was received by the ICG Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai from the vessel 'Limra'. The ship, which was navigating from Chittagong to Khor Fakkan, reported a devastating fire outbreak in its engine room at approximately 2:53 p.m., leading to a catastrophic power and propulsion failure. The crew, consisting of 21 individuals, including 18 Indian nationals, one Ukrainian, one Sri Lankan, and one Pakistani, managed to control the blaze during intense firefighting efforts. However, during the chaotic situation, a 36-year-old Sri Lankan engineer went missing. Upon discovery, his condition was found to be critical. The on-board crew provided immediate basic aid and urgently requested a medical evacuation. In response, the Indian Coast Guard deployed the patrol vessel 'Abhinav' and launched an Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) designed for medical emergencies from Kochi around 6 p.m. The helicopter successfully evacuated the critically injured crew member, who was later transported to Aster Medcity Hospital in Kochi, reaching around 7:42 p.m. Unfortunately, despite extensive medical intervention, the engineer succumbed to his injuries, marking a tragic incident in maritime operations.
