In the early hours of February 1, 2014, the tanker 'BSS Pride' became the target of a pirate assault while navigating the Rupat Strait, an area that separates Rupat Island from the Sumatra mainland, as reported by odin.tc. The vessel was on its way to Dumai port when the attack occurred at approximately 02:45 a.m. A group of pirates approached the tanker using a small boat and managed to board by using a bamboo ladder. Once on board, they assaulted two crew members on watch in the engine room, identified as Ukrainian Udalyakh Andry and Filipino Montalban. The attackers demanded the duo lead them to the storage area, from which they successfully stole packaged spare parts valued at around $20,500 before making their escape.
