Andrea Damato Engaged in Rescue Operation off the French Coast

Apr 24, 2012 22:30

In a heroic display of seamanship, the cargo vessel 'Andrea Damato', which was en route from Pascagoula to Hamburg, took part in a crucial search and rescue operation on April 23, 2012. The mission was launched following the distress of the 20-meter harbor tug 'Aquarius', built in 1965, which tragically sank amidst tumultuous sea conditions off the French coast. The incident left one crew member missing and presumed dead. Early that morning, 'Aquarius', which was traveling from La Coruna to Plymouth, issued a distress signal at 6:20 AM, indicating that it was taking on water and in grave danger of sinking. Just ten minutes later, the tug vanished beneath the waves, but not before two of its three crew members managed to escape into a life raft. The missing individual was believed to hail from the Derby area. Rescue efforts were promptly undertaken, with a French helicopter reaching the life raft near Ushant Island at around 7:30 AM British time. The two men, hailing from Wembury and Plymouth, were winched to safety and subsequently transported to a military hospital in Brest, where they received treatment for hypothermia and shock. As the search continued into the night, several ships and aircraft were redirected to the area to assist in locating the missing crew member, showcasing the unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety of those at sea.
