Daring Rescue by Tanker in Winter Storm Saves Yacht Crew
On February 15, 2015, a perilous situation unfolded as the 43-foot sailing vessel "Sedona" became disabled and adrift amidst a fierce winter storm approximately 150 miles south of Nantucket. Responding swiftly to the offshore distress call were the crews of the "Maersk Katalin" and the U.S. Coast Guard. Early on that fateful morning, around 4:50 a.m., watchstanders at the First Coast Guard District command center in Boston detected an emergency beacon signal from the "Sedona" and established communication with the crew via satellite phone. The operator conveyed that the vessel was out of power with torn sails and requested immediate evacuation for him and his father due to deteriorating weather conditions. In response, the command center dispatched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod to the scene. Despite the adverse storm conditions, the aircrew successfully launched; however, the supporting HC-144 Ocean Sentry was grounded due to icy conditions and poor visibility. To escalate the rescue efforts, the command center issued an emergency broadcast to nearby vessels. The crew aboard the "Maersk Katalin," navigating from St. John to Boston and located about 40 miles away, altered their course to lend communications assistance. Battling near-hurricane-force winds and reduced visibility, the helicopter crew arrived at the distress site at 8:48 a.m. They successfully hoisted both men from the yacht and transported them back to Air Station Cape Cod, landing at 10:50 a.m. The two sailors were subsequently handed over to local EMS for evaluation of potential cold-weather injuries.
