Kolskaya Jack-Up Rig Capsizes in Okhotsk Sea: 51 Missing and 2 Confirmed Dead

Dec 18, 2011 09:13

The Kolskaya jack-up rig experienced a catastrophic capsizing incident in the Okhotsk Sea while being towed by the icebreaker Magadan and the AHST Neftegaz-55. The incident occurred during the early hours of December 18, 2023, at approximately 02:24 Moscow time, as the rig was en route from the western coast of Kamchatka to Zyryanskaya Bay, Sakhalin Island. The vessel sent out a distress signal that was promptly received by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) in Sakhalin. At the time, the rig was located at coordinates 49°31'N 148°14'E, a substantial 153 nautical miles northeast of Cape Terpeniya, the easternmost point of Sakhalin Island. During the towing operation, severe damage occurred to air taps associated with tanks No. 35 and 37, leading to significant water ingress within the rig. Despite the pumps working at maximum capacity to manage the situation, the rig’s condition rapidly deteriorated. Shortly thereafter, the tow line from the icebreaker Magadan was also damaged, prompting Kolskaya to urgently request assistance. Tragically, at around 06:00 Moscow time, the Kolskaya capsized with 67 crew members on board. A rescue helicopter was dispatched from Nogliki airport, Sakhalin, and took off at 06:40. By 11:00 Moscow time, 14 individuals were rescued, while recovery teams confirmed the loss of 2 lives. The search and rescue operation is currently ongoing. The Kolskaya rig, measuring 70 meters in length and 80 meters in width, was constructed in 1985 in Finland and was classified under DNV standards. It is owned by Arktikmorneftegazrazvedka.
