Galatia Detained in Antwerp: Technical Failures Raise Concerns Over Shadow Fleet Operations

Aug 01, 2023 11:58

Authorities in Antwerp have made the decision to detain the tanker 'Galatia' following its arrival at the port on July 24, 2023. The ship was halted due to multiple technical deficiencies, with serious issues identified regarding essential emergency systems, including a malfunctioning emergency generator and non-operational fire pumps. In total, the 'Galatia' was cited for 22 deficiencies, seven of which were deemed 'serious' by Port State Control, indicating a failure to adhere to the International Treaty of Hong Kong (HKC) regulations. As a result of these findings, inspections have been halted, placing the responsibility on the vessel's owner to address and rectify the issues. The 'Galatia' is owned by Gatik, recognized as the largest operator within the dark fleet sector, specializing in Russian oil and shipping trade to European ports. Since April 2023, the tanker has been under the management of Gatik Ship Management from India, sparking an investigation into its operations. Concerns have been raised regarding the possibility that the 'Galatia' may have transported illegal cargo and engaged in ship-to-ship transfers in open waters, further implicating it in the shadow fleet operations that facilitate the ongoing export of Russian oil. The vessel set sail from Jeddah on June 29, 2023, and docked in Antwerp on July 23, but has been stationary in the Leopold Dock since August 2, awaiting resolution of its technical anomalies.

Tankers Stranded Off New York as Gasoline Storage Strains Highlight Supply Issues

Jul 06, 2016 08:52

In a troubling development for the U.S. fuel supply chain, at least two tankers have been anchored off the coast of New York for nearly a week, unable to offload their vital cargoes of gasoline components. This situation underscores a growing concern over the diminishing storage capacity for fuel in the region. Among the vessels affected is the 'Emerald Shiner', which has been anchored since June 28, 2016, carrying alkylate from Sikka. Also waiting outside New York is the 'Energy Progress', loaded with reformate from Turkey. In light of these logistics challenges, several other gasoline-laden tankers have shifted course from New York to alternative destinations, including Florida and the U.S. Gulf Coast. Notable among these diversions are the 'Energy Patriot', 'Seasalvia', and 'Ance', as ship tracking data reveals. The current excess of gasoline supplies, occurring during the peak summer demand period, raises concerns about refinery profitability moving forward. With global gasoline inventories steadily increasing due to refiners operating at maximum capacity on the expectation of robust summer demand—especially in the United States and Asia—the shifting market dynamics may prompt refiners to pivot from gasoline production to focus more on diesel and jet fuel manufacturing. As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how these supply chain disruptions will impact the overall fuel market in the coming months.
