A serious fire erupted on August 16, 2025, affecting two vessels at the Sinbuk port in the city of Yeosu. The first ship, identified as the 'Maly', was loaded with a staggering 2,500 tons of hazardous C5 chemicals and an additional 100 tons of fuel oil at the time of the incident. The flames swiftly spread to a nearby 24-ton cargo vessel moored alongside. Emergency responses were initiated at 1:04 a.m. after a nearby ship alerted the Coast Guard, leading to the deployment of 15 vessels and a fireboat to combat the blaze. While the fire on the smaller cargo vessel was managed and extinguished by 3:17 a.m., extinguishing the blaze on the 'Maly' took a grueling six hours, concluding at 7:45 a.m. Fortunately, all 14 crew members aboard the 'Maly' and the four crew members of the smaller vessel were safely rescued. However, the captain of the cargo vessel was found unconscious and was later pronounced dead. Among the tanker’s crew, one Myanmar national in his 30s sustained serious injuries, while a second Myanmar crew member in his 20s suffered minor injuries. As authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire, it remains uncertain whether there was any leak of the hazardous chemicals involved.
