Significant Oil Spill Incident in St. Petersburg's Port
An oil spill incident shook the port of St. Petersburg on January 27, 2019, during a routine bunkering operation between the vessel 'Celia' and the tanker 'Abrau'. The spill, which occurred at berth No. 103 at 06:30 a.m., resulted in an estimated 0.2 to 0.3 cubic meters of oil leaking onto the deck and spilling overboard from the 'Celia'. Two oil slicks were observed on the frozen port waters, with dimensions measuring 3 x 1.5 meters and 2 x 1.5 meters. The port tug 'Borey' was promptly deployed and commenced oil recovery operations at 6:20 p.m. However, efforts to remove the oil-snow mixture from the ice adjacent to the 'Celia' were halted after around two cubic meters of oil had been successfully collected, concluding those operations at 8 p.m. Additional cleanup efforts are scheduled to resume on January 28 at 8 a.m., aiming to address the remaining environmental impact caused by this spill.
