New US Sanctions Target Six Tankers in Venezuelan Oil Trade
In a recent move to enforce its embargo on oil shipments involving Venezuela, the United States has placed sanctions on six tankers that are attempting to circumvent these restrictions. Among those on the list, four vessels have links to Ukraine, one is affiliated with Russia, and one is directly connected to Venezuela. Notably, three of these tankers—the 'Balita', 'Domani', and 'Freedom'—are operated by Fides Ship Management, a Ukrainian company. Additionally, the 'Legacy' was previously managed by Fides Ship Management until 2020 and is now under the management of the Russian firm Berylicious. The other sanctioned vessels include the 'Maxim Gorki', which is managed by Transocean Shipping based in Moscow but owned by Venezuela's national oil company, INEA, and the 'Sierra', operated by the company Rustanker. These sanctions reflect ongoing U.S. efforts to curb illicit oil trading with Venezuela.
Coast Guard Conducts Medical Evacuation of Injured Crew Member Off Cape May
On February 11, 2013, the U.S. Coast Guard successfully executed a medical evacuation of a 37-year-old man from the tanker 'Angistri', situated approximately 23 miles east of Cape May, New Jersey. The incident unfolded when the vessel’s crew alerted Coast Guard watchstanders at around 8:15 p.m., reporting that an engineer had sustained steam burns while working in the engine room. In response to the emergency request, a 45-foot Response Boat from Coast Guard Station Cape May was dispatched to the distress scene. Upon arrival, the small-boat crew evaluated the injured engineer's condition and safely transferred him to the RB-M. He was then transported back to the station, where care was handed over to the Coast Guard Training Center Cape May Fire Department and local emergency medical personnel. Subsequently, he was taken to Cape May Regional Hospital where he was reported to be in stable condition.
