Heroic Rescue of 81-Year-Old Sailor by AMVER-Participating Ship
On June 16, 2021, an extraordinary maritime rescue unfolded 400 miles southeast of Long Island, New York, when the crew of the 'Mare Picenum' saved an 81-year-old sailor stranded aboard his disabled 36-foot vessel, the 'Katharina'. The drama began the previous day, June 15, when the Coast Guard's 1st District Command Center received an urgent alert just after 4:52 a.m., indicating that the German-flagged 'Katharina' had lost its mast and was in dire need of assistance. In a swift response, an HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod was dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, the crew established communication with the stranded sailor and promptly activated the Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue (AMVER) system to locate nearby vessels willing to assist. The call was answered by the 'Mare Picenum', which was positioned less than 25 miles away. Notifications were relayed, and by approximately 9:30 a.m., the crew of the 'Mare Picenum' began their journey to the distressed sailor. They successfully executed the rescue at 12:54 p.m. Fortunately, the sailor reported no medical issues or injuries and was the sole occupant of the yacht. At the time of the rescue, the weather conditions posed challenges, with winds reaching 35 mph and swells measuring five feet.
