Ship Traffic Disrupted by Protesters from Ironworkers Memorial Bridge
On July 4, 2018, the departure of the 'Maersk Bering' from Vancouver to Nantong was impeded due to a public protest. The ship was unable to leave its anchorage point east of the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge at 3 p.m. because of a demonstration involving seven individuals who had suspended themselves beneath the bridge. This protest was initiated the previous morning by a group of 12 activists who created what they termed an 'aerial blockade.' Their objective was to halt oil tanker traffic in and out of the Trans Mountain pipeline terminus located in Burnaby, British Columbia. Seven individuals rappelled down to dangle mid-air over Burrard Inlet, while the remaining five provided support from the catwalk above. Following the conclusion of the protest, the 'Maersk Bering' was able to resume its journey and departed on the morning of July 5. Additionally, the 'Nord Supreme,' which was scheduled to move from an anchorage position west of the bridge to Suncor’s Burrard Terminal at 4:15 a.m. on the same day, experienced a delay, ultimately departing at 10 p.m. on July 4.
