On July 14, 2016, a small incident occurred in the Houston Ship Channel involving the vessel 'Maritime Jingan,' which was docked at the Vopak Terminal. During operations, approximately 1.5 tons of benzene were spilled on the cargo deck, with a minor amount leaking into the water. The incident prompted an immediate response, with Vopak Terminal staff alerting Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders around noon. In addition, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department was promptly informed of the situation. The leak has since been contained, and a thorough investigation into the cause is currently underway. Due to the spill response efforts, the channel was closed to traffic between the Lynchburg Ferry Crossing and Carpenters Bayou from 12:23 p.m. until 2:40 p.m., allowing HAZMAT teams to conduct essential cleanup operations.
