Tragic Sinking of Cargo Ship 'Kuala Mas' Following Collision in Kupang Waters
On December 21, 2024, the cargo vessel m/v 'Kuala Mas' met with disaster after colliding with the KM 'Maritim Khatulistiwa' in the anchorage area of Tenau Port, Kupang. The incident unfolded at 02:30 a.m. WITA, when the watch team at KSOP Kupang received alerts regarding the collision, believed to be triggered by strong currents that pushed the 'Kuala Mas' adrift during its maneuvering operations. As a result of the collision, the vessel sustained a significant leak on its starboard side. By 05:20 a.m., the captain of 'Kuala Mas' decided to ground the ship near ASDP Bolok Pier in position 10°13.110' S 123°30.413' E in a last-ditch effort to prevent further sinking. A response team from KSOP Kupang arrived around 06:30 a.m. to assist with crew evacuation and securing the ship's vital documents. However, despite offers of assistance, the crew opted to remain onboard in their attempt to salvage the vessel. By 08:02 a.m., facing mounting challenges, the crew issued an evacuation request via VHF radio. Just minutes later, at 08:08 a.m., the captain and all crew members ultimately made the decision to abandon the vessel. A nearby tug, 'Putri Harbour,' successfully evacuated the 20 crew members, transporting them to Polairud Pier by 08:12 a.m. At approximately 08:34 a.m., the situation worsened as the 'Kuala Mas' was reported to have capsized, with much of the ship submerged while containers floated dangerously in the surrounding waters. Only a small part of the port side foreship remained visible above the surface. In response to potential environmental hazards, the KSOP Kupang coordinated with relevant shipping agencies and Pertamina to deploy oil booms in anticipation of marine pollution. Investigations are currently underway to assess the exact cause of this incident and formulate necessary mitigation strategies.
