Shipping Resumes in Black Sea: Tankers Set Sail for Ukraine
On October 27, 2023, four vessels departed from the Black Sea ports in the Odesa region of Ukraine, marking the resumption of shipping activities through a newly established export corridor after a brief three-day hiatus. The tankers 'Propus', 'Iasos', 'Gloria G', and 'Manassa Queen' left Odesa ports, while the bulk carrier 'Golden Arrow', alongside cargo ship 'Maranta' and another vessel 'Mavka', was en route to Ukraine's maritime hubs. The previous day, October 26, a report from the Kiev-based consultancy Barva Invest, British security firm Ambrey, and the specialist publication Ukrainian Ports indicated a temporary suspension of the corridor due to potential risks posed by Russian military aircraft and possible mines. However, Ukrainian authorities refuted these claims, with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy affirming on October 27 that operations within the corridor would persist despite ongoing threats. This corridor has been crucial for Ukraine's attempt to revive its maritime exports amidst escalating Russian tensions, particularly after the Kremlin withdrew from a United Nations brokered agreement in July, which previously facilitated food exports amidst the ongoing conflict. As of October 26, 23 vessels were actively loading in Odesa, Chornomorsk, and Pivdennyi ports. Since the corridor's inception, a total of 51 ships have taken advantage of the route, with 33 managing to export over 1.3 million tons of Ukrainian agricultural products and various other goods.
