Trawler Rescued After Stormy Struggles Near Svalbard

Nov 17, 2016 10:52

On November 13, 2016, a dramatic rescue unfolded in the turbulent waters off Svalbard involving the Norwegian patrol boat 'Harstad' and the trawler 'Melkart 3'. The trawler had fallen victim to a rope entangling its propeller while cod fishing, leaving it vulnerable amid fierce storms with waves reaching heights of eight meters in the Fisheries Protection Zone. To ensure the safety of the vessel and its crew, the Norwegian Coast Guard made the decision to tow the 'Melkart 3' towards the Norwegian coast, although initially, they planned to guide it to Longyearbyen. Due to constrained resources, however, they opted for the longer journey back to mainland Norway. Over the span of 340 miles, the trawler was towed at a mere speed of 1.5 knots. The situation saw a shift on the morning of November 17 when the offshore supply vessel 'NSO Crusader' (IMO: 8224470), dispatched from Hammerfest, fortunately took over the towing operations. The convoy then made its way toward the port of Honningsvåg, reaching their destination by 6:30 p.m. After a brief stay, the 'Melkart 3' departed Honningsvåg at 2:20 a.m. on November 19, setting course back to the fishing grounds in the Norwegian Sea. This remarkable incident highlights the challenges faced in arctic waters and the importance of quick response in maritime emergencies.
