Successful Refloating of Bulk Carrier 'Mercury Ocean'
The bulk carrier 'Mercury Ocean' has been successfully refloated following a meticulous salvage operation. Divers conducted a thorough inspection of the vessel's hull before repair patches were applied. On October 30, the vessel was towed away by tugs 'Beringuv Proliv' (IMO: 9682411) and 'Rubin', subsequently anchoring at coordinates 49° 59.30' N 140° 34.88' E. After extensive surveys, plans were laid out to transport the ship to the nearest port for further repairs. The salvage operation proved to be particularly challenging due to the presence of 12,000 tons of coal on board. The team managed to successfully lighten the load by removing 4,000 tons of the coal cargo, along with pumping out 5,000 tons of ballast water, which ultimately facilitated the refloating of the vessel.
Bulk Carrier 'Mercury Ocean' Grounds at Boshnyakovo Anchorage
On the night of October 25, 2020, the bulk carrier 'Mercury Ocean', carrying a crew of 20, experienced an anchor drag and subsequently ran aground at the Boshnyakovo Anchorage, located on the western coast of Sakhalin in the Tatarskiy Strait. At the time of the incident, the vessel was partially loaded with 12,000 tons of coal as it was in the process of loading. Despite the challenges posed by heavy surf, the crew opted to remain on board while a search and rescue tug departed from Korsakov to assist in pulling the vessel back to deeper waters. As of October 26, the 'Mercury Ocean' was reported to be firmly grounded at coordinates 49° 37.44' N, 142° 7.90' E, with efforts to refloat the ship hampered by storm conditions and icy sludge.
