Tanker 'Meteora' Experiences Mechanical Failure Near Patroklos
On August 25, 2024, the Piraeus Port Authority received a notification from the captain of the oil tanker 'Meteora', which was navigating from Batumi to Amsterdam. The vessel encountered a significant setback due to a mechanical failure that resulted in a temporary loss of control approximately 7.8 nautical miles west of the islet of Patroklos. Despite the severity of the situation, the 27 crew members on board did not request external assistance. The 'Meteora' was able to regain functionality and continued its journey to the anchorage at the Port of Piraeus. Upon arrival, the tanker was subjected to a sailing ban until it could present a certificate verifying compliance with class maintenance standards from the overseeing classification society.
Rescue Operations Underway for Grounded Tanker Meteora Near Bozcaada
The Turkish Coast Guard sprang into action on July 30 at 7:35 p.m. when the tanker 'Meteora' ran aground north of Bozcaada. In response to the emergency, the Coast Guard promptly deployed the tugboat 'Kurtarma 2' and the lifeboat 'Kıyı Emniyeti 3' to assist in the situation. To further mitigate risks, the anti-pollution vessel 'Tahlisiye II' was also sent to the scene. The 'Meteora', which has a draught of nine meters, departed from Agioi Theodoroi Port on July 28 and was heading to Poti. On board the vessel are 25 crew members. On the evening of July 30, 2023, at approximately 19:30 local time, the chemical tanker Meteora encountered difficulties and ran aground north of Bozcaada Island in the Aegean Sea while navigating towards the Dardanelles Strait. The vessel, carrying a substantial cargo of 27,481 tons of kerosene, was making its way from Greece to Poti, Georgia, on the Black Sea. Fortunately, as of the morning of July 31, there have been no reports of leaks from the tanker. However, the Meteora remains firmly aground as salvage efforts are anticipated.
