In a significant intervention, officials from the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) successfully prevented the 'Metis Leader' from evading scrutiny by Australian authorities in the Port of Melbourne. The vessel, which had delivered vehicles to Australia on October 19, 2020, was found to be in serious breach of crew welfare regulations. A thorough inspection revealed that several crew members had exceeded the allowable working period of 11 months established by the Maritime Labour Convention, with particular concern for vessels flagged to Panama and the 14-month limit set by Australian authorities. The vessel was permitted to depart only after the crew's safety was assured. Ultimately, the 'Metis Leader' set sail from Melbourne on October 21.
