In a dramatic turn of events, the tanker 'Minerva Gloria' had to make an unexpected change to its course from Maracaibo to Hamburg after its 47-year-old Greek captain fell critically ill. Located 420 kilometers southwest of Terceira Island, the vessel required immediate medical intervention. On February 24, 2019, the captain was successfully medevaced by an EH.101-Merlin helicopter from the 751 Squadron of the Portuguese Air Force. The operation unfolded under challenging weather conditions, with winds reaching a height of 12 meters and speeds of 74 km/h. The captain was hoisted from the vessel and subsequently transferred to a hospital in Ponta Delgada for treatment. Additionally, a P-3C CUP aircraft from Squadron 601 'Lobos' played a crucial role in supporting the mission. Following the incident, the 'Minerva Gloria' resumed its journey, with an estimated time of arrival set for February 28.
