On May 20, 2015, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) of Richards Bay sprang into action after receiving a distress call from the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA). The vessel "Canon Trader I," en route from Tuticorin to Richards Bay, reported a 25-year-old Filipino crew member who was experiencing severe dehydration and stomach cramps. With the ship's arrival at anchorage scheduled for 7 p.m., the NSRI prepared for the critical rescue operation. The rescue craft, "Spirit of Richards Bay," was launched, accompanied by a Netcare 911 rescue paramedic. Upon reaching the ship, the NSRI team and the paramedic quickly treated the ailing crew member with intravenous fluids and oxygen. After stabilizing his condition, they secured him in a Stokes basket stretcher and transferred him to the sea rescue craft for the journey back to shore. A Netcare 911 ambulance was waiting to take the patient to a local hospital, where he continued to receive treatment in stable condition.
