Engine Room Blaze Averts Mönchgut's Departure from Göhren
On March 29, 2026, an alarming incident occurred aboard the ferry 'Mönchgut' at the Göhren pier in Rügen as white smoke was detected emanating from the exhaust vent on the port side around 11:30 a.m. The vessel was preparing to embark on a nine-hour journey destined for the stunning chalk cliffs of Rügen, with 24 passengers and five crew members on board. This scenic excursion was to include scheduled stops at Göhren, Sellin, and Binz. For safety protocols, all passengers were promptly instructed to disembark while the crew investigated. They discovered smoke actively filling the engine room and identified a fire near the exhaust vent. Initial attempts to extinguish the flames with a powder extinguisher were ineffective. The crew quickly acted to shut down the fuel supply to the engines, subsequently deploying the ship's fire suppression system by flooding the engine room with carbon dioxide, effectively extinguishing the blaze. Local water police documented the incident, and the maritime safety authority was notified, resulting in a temporary sailing ban for the 'Mönchgut.' However, a special authorization was granted for the vessel to be towed to a nearby shipyard with the help of a tugboat. At 9:30 p.m. UTC on the same day, the ship was transported to Peene Shipyard in Wolgast, arriving at 6 a.m. on March 30. Damage from the fire was estimated at approximately €10,000. In light of the incident, all upcoming sailings were suspended, prompting Adler Shipping to quickly revise its schedule. Starting March 30, trips to the iconic chalk cliffs were resumed aboard the vessel ‘Binz,’ with departure times set for 11:00 a.m. in Göhren, 11:30 a.m. in Sellin, and 12:30 p.m. in Binz.
Mönchgut Grounded by Storm Surge off Freest
On the evening of August 3, 2017, the passenger ship "Mönchgut" encountered a significant setback as it ran aground near Freest while carrying 37 passengers. A sudden and powerful storm gust, reaching speeds of 117 km/h, forced the vessel off its designated fairway, leaving it immobilized and unable to navigate back to safe waters on its own. In response to the maritime distress, the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) dispatched the lifeboat "Heinz Orth" to the scene. The dedicated crew successfully towed the "Mönchgut" back into deeper waters, allowing the ship to resume its journey towards Peenemünde on Usedom without further assistance. Fortunately, the incident did not pose any risk to the passengers or crew onboard.
Mönchsgut Runs Aground Near Peenemünde
On June 19, 2015, the passenger vessel 'Mönchsgut' veered off its intended course and became stranded in the constricted navigational channel of the Peene River. Strong winds propelled the ship onto a shallow area, rendering it unable to refloat autonomously. In response, the lifeboat 'Eugen' from the DGzRS Station Greifswalder Oie was dispatched for assistance. Thanks to their prompt action, the 'Eugen' successfully towed the 'Mönchsgut' back to safety in short order. Fortunately, all 16 passengers on board were unharmed during the incident.
