MSC Seascape Breaks Free from Dock Due to High Winds at Ocean Cay

Jun 02, 2025 09:09

On May 31, 2025, the cruise ship MSC Seascape faced an unexpected challenge when it broke free from its moorings at the private island of Ocean Cay, an occurrence triggered by strong winds that caused mooring lines to snap. The vessel had set sail from Miami on May 29 for an exciting weekend cruise in the Bahamas, including a stop at Nassau on May 30, followed by a visit to the Ocean Cay Marine Reserve. Around 3 p.m. on the day of the incident, gusty winds hit the starboard side of the MSC Seascape, applying pressure that exceeded the capacity of its mooring lines. As passengers were returning to the ship to seek refuge from the inclement weather, the primary bow lines broke and the ship began to drift away from its dock. The crew quickly responded to the alarming situation, securing the vessel and preventing passengers from boarding as the ship unexpectedly pulled away. In the chaos, the gangway fell into the water, but thanks to the crew's swift and proficient actions, only minor injuries were reported. Their emergency procedures were executed flawlessly, showcasing their extensive training and preparedness for such situations. Ocean Cay served as the second and final stop on this 3-night cruise getaway, with the MSC Seascape scheduled to return to Miami on the morning of June 1. Miami-Dade Police Launch Investigation into Allegations of Assault on MSC Seascape

Dec 11, 2024 12:38

A serious incident aboard the MSC Seascape has prompted an investigation by the Miami-Dade County police. A 44-year-old woman from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, reported being sexually assaulted twice by crew members during her journey, which commenced from Port Miami. The passenger filed a formal complaint on December 7, 2024, the same day the cruise ship returned from its voyage. According to Miami-Dade police, they are actively pursuing the allegations. The cruise line has confirmed that they are cooperating fully with law enforcement and have provided support to the guest throughout the process. In their statement, the company acknowledged the gravity of the situation and affirmed their commitment to assisting authorities in the investigation. Following the incident, the passenger expressed dissatisfaction with how her reports were handled on board. The case is now under the jurisdiction of the state attorney’s office. The MSC Seascape set sail from Port Miami on November 30 and returned on December 7. The passenger, traveling alone, stated she had taken anti-anxiety medication before consuming rum punch, which led to disorientation. After attempting to gather food from the buffet, she was approached by a crew member who offered to assist her back to her cabin. Instead of simply delivering her meal, the crew member allegedly assaulted her. The following day, she encountered another crew member, and after disclosing her room number, she claimed she was raped for the second time. Both incidents were promptly reported to the ship's security team.

Search Efforts Halted for Missing MSC Seascape Crew Member

Nov 17, 2023 09:46

The United States Coast Guard has officially suspended the search for a missing crew member from the 'MSC Seascape'. The operation came to a halt on the night of November 15, 2023, following reports that the crew member, a 30-year-old man of Indian nationality, had fallen overboard into the Atlantic Ocean, just north of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. Eyewitness accounts indicated that he went overboard approximately 80 feet from the ship's bow, falling from a height of around 32 feet above the water. At the time, he was seen wearing a white shirt and red shorts. The initial alert regarding the incident was communicated to the Coast Guard by the cruise ship on November 12 at approximately 8:57 p.m., while the vessel was making its way from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic. To aid in their search, the Coast Guard deployed a self-locating datum marker buoy which measures ocean currents. On the morning of November 15, rescue crews successfully located three life rings; however, only two were retrieved. Despite extensive efforts, which spanned a total of 34 hours and involved 12 separate searches across an area of roughly 887 square nautical miles, search teams found no signs of the missing crew member. The searching assets included MH-60T Jayhawk helicopters from Air Station Borinquen, the Coast Guard Cutters 'Joseph Napier' and 'Joseph Doyle', along with support from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Puerto Rico Police Joint Forces of Rapid Action, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, and the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary Civil Air Patrol. The 'MSC Seascape' was also involved in the search operation.
