MSC Sinfonia Faces Propulsion Issues, Cruise Canceled Amidst Technical Challenges

Apr 14, 2025 11:11

On April 11, 2025, the MSC Sinfonia encountered significant propulsion issues while docked at the new port of Corfu. The vessel, which was accommodating 2,193 passengers and 730 crew members, reported a failure in its starboard side propeller as part of the propulsion-steering system. In response, the Corfu Central Port Authority initially barred the cruise ship from departing. However, after presenting a seaworthiness certificate from the monitoring classification society, the MSC Sinfonia was granted permission to embark on a single voyage, albeit under tow by the tug 'Megalochari XIV' (IMO: 9199452). The ship set sail with a delayed schedule and arrived in Bari on April 13, well after the expected 8:00 a.m. arrival time. During its transit from Corfu to Bari, the vessel struggled to reach its usual cruising speed, at times only managing four knots. As a consequence of these unforeseen technical difficulties, MSC Cruises announced the cancellation of the Eastern Mediterranean cruise that was supposed to commence from Bari on April 12, just one day before the planned departure. This disruption affected not only the cruise itinerary but also impacted guests with varied embarkation and disembarkation arrangements. To accommodate those impacted, MSC Cruises is offering a full refund of travel costs along with a future travel credit equal to the original price paid for an MSC cruise. As of April 14, the MSC Sinfonia remained in Bari, with technicians working tirelessly to address the ongoing technical issues. The timeline for the resolution remains uncertain, depending on the severity of the ship’s mechanical problems.

Cruise Lines Alter Itineraries Following Hamas Attack on Israel

Oct 13, 2023 10:16

In the wake of the Hamas attack on Israel, several cruise lines have decided to suspend calls at Israeli ports due to security concerns. MSC Cruises made an announcement on October 12, 2023, indicating revisions to itineraries for the 'MSC Sinfonia' and 'MSC Musica' (IMO 9320087) operating in the Eastern Mediterranean. As part of these changes, the port of Haifa will be replaced by Istanbul for the next eight voyages of the 'MSC Sinfonia' until early 2024. Consequently, Rhodes will be swapped for Piraeus, and Limassol will be changed to Izmir. For the upcoming three sailings of the 'MSC Musica' from Piraeus, Haifa is set to be substituted by Rhodes on October 18 and 25, followed by Marmaris, Turkey, on November 1. Additionally, TUI Cruises has revised the routes for two sailings of the 'Mein Schiff 5' (IMO: 9753193), opting to bypass Haifa and Ashdod in favor of stops in Marmaris and Santorini. The 'Nieuw Statendam' (IMO 9767106), which was docked in Haifa during the attack, originally planned to remain until the evening of October 8 before heading to Ashdod. Instead, it departed on October 7 and redirected to Alanya. Other vessels including the 'Odyssey of the Seas' (IMO: 9795737) and 'Celebrity Apex' (IMO: 9838383) also altered their courses, choosing to make calls at Bodrum and Limassol. Furthermore, the 'Norwegian Gem' (IMO: 9355733) has canceled its planned stop in Ashdod, redirecting to Limassol instead. These itinerary changes reflect the growing emphasis on passenger safety in light of recent regional conflicts.

Emergency Medical Evacuation from MSC Sinfonia Near Brindisi

Jul 23, 2023 15:13

On July 22, 2023, a serious medical emergency unfolded aboard the 'MSC Sinfonia' as a passenger required immediate evacuation due to health complications. The cruise ship was navigating approximately 35 miles off the Brindisi coastline when the Brindisi Coastguard was alerted for assistance. A patrol boat was promptly dispatched to facilitate the medevac operation. The ship's medical personnel were quick to respond to the situation, providing essential care, complemented by remote guidance from the Centro Internazionale Radio Medico, which coordinated the patient's diagnosis and subsequent transfer to medical facilities. Once the patrol boat safely reached the dock at the Port Authority, an ambulance was on standby to expedite the passenger’s transport. The patient was swiftly conveyed to Perrino Hospital in Brindisi for further treatment, highlighting the effective collaboration between maritime and healthcare services in emergency situations.
