On December 9, 2024, the Weda Pioneer encountered a significant setback when the vessel suffered a main engine failure while navigating from Tanjung Priok to Weda. The incident occurred at precisely 5:54 p.m., marked by a loud thumping noise, followed by an automatic shutdown of the main engine just moments later. A thorough visual inspection was promptly initiated, leading to the use of the turning gear to investigate potential obstructions in the piston or crankshaft system. During the inspection, crew members noted a concerning spray of lubricating oil emanating forcefully from the indicator cocks of cylinders No. 1, 6, and 7, suggesting an oil leak into the combustion chambers. Conversely, only coolant was found leaking from the indicator cock of cylinder No. 4, which prompted immediate maintenance actions, including the replacement of the cylinder and an overhaul of the injectors in cylinders No. 1, 6, and 7. Essential O-ring injector holders were swapped out with available spare parts aboard. As investigations continue to uncover the underlying cause of the lubricating oil breach into the combustion chambers, the Weda Pioneer remains not under command (NUC) as of December 12, 2024, positioned at coordinates S 03° 01' S 126° 11' E.
