Pirate Attacks Target Two Tankers Near Singapore: AD Phoenix and Nadiya Melisende
In a troubling turn of events, two tankers were attacked by pirates in the South China Sea, near Singapore, within a span of just 24 hours. On April 23, 2013, at approximately 0407 hrs, the asphalt tanker AD Phoenix was navigating about 15.4 nautical miles north-northeast of Pulau Bintan, Indonesia. During this time, a group of five armed pirates boarded the vessel using a high-speed wooden craft, stealing cash and personal belongings from the crew before making their escape. The following day, April 24, 2013, around 0400 hrs, another assault occurred involving the product tanker Nadiya Melisende. Pirates, estimated to be a similar number as those from the AD Phoenix incident, approached the tanker from a high-speed wooden craft near the same vicinity, specifically about 3.2 nautical miles northwest of Pulau Batam, Indonesia, within the Straits of Malacca & Singapore. These assailants also managed to evade capture, taking with them cash, crew's personal items, and various properties of the ship. This series of incidents has raised significant concerns regarding maritime security in the region, as reported by the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP).
