Nanuq to Assist with Towing Damaged Drilling Rig Kulluk in Alaska
The 'Nanuq' is set to play a crucial role in escorting the damaged drill vessel 'Kulluk' as it makes its journey from Kiliuda Bay on Kodiak Island to Dutch Harbor. This operation marks the initial phase of transporting the 'Kulluk' to a shipyard in Asia for necessary repairs following its grounding during a storm on December 31. The decision to proceed with this towing was supported by an independent review from Det Norske Veritas (DNV), which confirmed the vessel's structural integrity and stability is suitable for towing. Shell has successfully secured DNV Class Certification and Flag State approval for the 'Kulluk,' as noted in a statement released on February 13 by the Unified Command, the collaborative team between Shell and the U.S. Coast Guard overseeing the incident. With the Unified Command completing their operation, Coast Guard and Shell personnel have returned to their routine duties, although the Coast Guard will continue to supervise the preparations for the 'Kulluk's' movement. The Captain of the Port order will be rescinded once all necessary conditions have been satisfied. After an extensive evaluation and onboard assessments, Shell has affirmed that the 'Kulluk' is safe for towing out of Kiliuda Bay. The damage assessment concluded that the inner hull remains intact and all fuel tanks are operational, despite the outer hull sustaining expected damage from being aground in harsh weather conditions. Additionally, water damage affected the superstructure, compromising some technical equipment and breaching windows and hatches. During the transit, which is estimated to last around 10 days, the 'Kulluk' will be towed by three ocean-going tugs with the support of the response vessel 'Nanuq.' Upon arrival at Dutch Harbor, preparations will begin for the 'dry-tow' of the drill vessel to a specialized heavy-lift ship destined for a shipyard in Asia.
