Tanker Runs Aground in Kiel Canal: North Sea Rational Incident

Mar 02, 2018 09:37

On March 2, 2018, at approximately 4:15 a.m., the tanker "North Sea Rational" found itself aground on the northern embankment of the Kiel Canal, specifically in the Horsten area, situated between Rendsburg and Oldenbüttel. This incident occurred while the vessel was traveling in a westerly direction, having departed from Riga. The grounded tanker experienced an engine failure, leaving the crew unable to restart the engine. Consequently, assistance was summoned from the specialized tugboats. The SFK tug "Holtenau" (IMO No.: 8200321) from Kiel and the Bugsier tug "Wolf" (IMO No.: 9036260) from Brunsbüttel were dispatched to the scene. Upon the arrival of the "Holtenau" at 6:30 a.m., the Kiel Canal was temporarily closed to ship traffic between Rendsburg and Breiholz. After the tug successfully connected to the stern of the "North Sea Rational," one-way traffic was allowed to resume in the canal. To further stabilize the situation, the crew dropped the starboard anchor. By shortly after 8 a.m., the tugs successfully extricated the vessel from the embankment. Following the recovery, the tanker was towed to Breiholz for preliminary assessments before the convoy proceeded to Brunsbüttel, where it docked at the South Quay at 2:20 p.m. for comprehensive investigations. The inspection revealed that a cylinder's piston in the main engine had broken, necessitating repairs. Following the repairs, the tanker resumed its voyage on March 15, ultimately reaching Rotterdam on March 17.
