On Thursday, a 29-year-old crew member from the bulk carrier Brasschaat lost his life in an accident while on duty. The Brasschaat, which has been anchored near the Tyne port since June following its owner's bankruptcy filing, has become known as a 'ghost ship' as it remains inactive in the waters. The AoS is working to ensure that the crew receives the necessary support during this challenging time as they cope with the loss of their colleague.

An investigation has been initiated by Northumbria Police following a tragic incident aboard the vessel 'Brasschaat,' which occurred on October 20, 2016, at approximately 2:30 p.m. A man fell from a significant height while the ship was anchored 1.5 kilometers off the coast of Tynemouth, North Tyneside. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) played a crucial role in this emergency, assisting paramedics from the North East Ambulance Service in reaching the ship. Crew members onboard promptly began CPR efforts, supported by an available doctor. In response to the emergency, a Coastguard helicopter was dispatched from Humber to the scene. After the critical situation was assessed, crew members were winched off from the vessel. The 'Brasschaat,' along with two other Belgian ships, 'Vyritsa' and 'Zarechensk,' has been moored off North Tyneside for several months.
