New Shipping Expands Fleet with Acquisition of Secondhand Capesize Bulker from NYK Line

Oct 14, 2016 10:40

New Shipping, under the leadership of Adam Polemis, is making waves in the secondhand shipping market by acquiring the 2007-built capesize bulk carrier, Ocean Crescent, from Japan's esteemed NYK Line for $12 million. This latest addition marks the second vessel the Greek shipping company has purchased from NYK in 2023. Just ahead of the prestigious Posidonia maritime event, the firm also secured the 2002-built 298,400 dwt Nippon for a notable $28.3 million. Beyond these significant transactions, New Shipping has also added the 2008-built Aframax TH Sonata and a four-year-old handysize bulk carrier from another Japanese firm, Daiichi Chuo, to its expanding fleet. New Shipping originated as a spin-off from Polemis Shipping after the Polemis brothers, Spiros and Adam, decided to pursue separate paths in the maritime industry a few years ago.

Heroic Rescue: Cargo Ship Aids in Saving Crew of Stranded Catamaran

Feb 02, 2015 10:52

On January 31, 2015, the cargo ship "Ocean Crescent" played a pivotal role in a dramatic search and rescue operation conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard. The incident unfolded approximately 200 miles off the North Carolina coast, when a 55-foot catamaran named "Rain Maker," originating from Manhattan, suffered a catastrophic mast failure amid fierce 40-mph winds and towering 13-foot waves. Watchstanders at the Coast Guard's 5th District Command Center in Portsmouth were alerted around 1:50 p.m. concerning the perilous situation. In response, the Coast Guard promptly issued an urgent marine information broadcast and took swift action to deploy aircrews. The crew of the "Ocean Crescent" responded to the distress signal, indicating their location just 40 miles away and their intention to assist in the rescue operations. At approximately 3:20 p.m., both an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and a C-130 Hercules aircraft from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina, were launched to the scene. The "Ocean Crescent" reached the distressed catamaran around 4:05 p.m. and attempted to maneuver alongside it, but the challenging conditions thwarted their efforts. Soon after, around 5 p.m., the Coast Guard helicopter crew arrived, successfully hoisting all five individuals from the "Rain Maker" to safety. The rescued crew members were subsequently taken to Dare County Regional Airport in Manteo, North Carolina, where they arrived at around 8:10 p.m., all reported to be in good health following their harrowing ordeal.
