Tanker New England Aids in Dramatic Ocean Hunter Rescue
On April 6, 2016, a timely rescue operation unfolded 59 kilometers off the coast of Yarmouth, when the fishing vessel Ocean Hunter issued a mayday call shortly after midnight due to taking on water. The situation prompted a swift response from the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) in Halifax, which dispatched a Hercules C-130 aircraft alongside a Cormorant helicopter from the 413 Squadron. The tanker New England was the first to arrive on the scene at 1:15 a.m., providing critical assistance to the stricken vessel. The Cormorant helicopter followed closely, arriving at 1:40 a.m., while the Canadian Coastguard's Westport cutter reached the area at 1:55 a.m. In a successful collaboration, the cutter's crew supplied the two-man crew of Ocean Hunter with a pump to expel the seawater as the vessel was towed back to safety in Meteghan.
