On the evening of July 2, 2026, a rapid response by the Iceland Coast Guard was set into motion when a passenger fell ill on board the 'National Geographic Explorer', which was situated approximately 150 nautical miles northwest of the Westfjords, in the waters between Iceland and Greenland. The urgency of the situation prompted the deployment of a helicopter, TF-Gró, alongside a surveillance aircraft, TF-Sif. Departing from Reykjavík around 7 p.m., the helicopter reached the distressed vessel nearly one hour and forty minutes later. Upon arrival, it successfully hoisted an elderly passenger aboard before making its way back to safety. Given the considerable distance from land, the collaboration between the helicopter and surveillance aircraft proved crucial during the rescue mission. The surveillance aircraft facilitated vital communication throughout the operation. The Coast Guard helicopter touched down at the airport at 10:21 p.m., where an ambulance awaited to transport the patient to the hospital for further medical care.
