On April 14, 2025, at approximately 5:15 PM, the cargo vessel 'Nhô Padre Benjamim' tragically sank off the coast of São Nicolau, Cape Verde. The incident took place near Preguiça de São Nicolau, specifically in the locality referred to as "Praia Sgorfe." At the time, the ship was en route from Sal to São Nicolau, carrying essential supplies for construction activities at Preguiça airport, including gravel and trucks. Fortunately, all 20 individuals on board, comprising 19 crew members and one passenger, were rescued unharmed by local fishermen. The crew members are currently being accommodated at the Meia Mona sports pavilion in Ribeira Brava. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the factors that led to the sinking of the ship.
